Amador STARS, with the help of dedicated volunteer drivers, coordinates free transportation services to and from treatments for cancer patients. The "cancer vans" have safely transported hundreds of local residents to thousands of out-of-town radiation treatments. The transportation program is funded, driven and serviced by local volunteers. STARS currently has six cancer vans that travel to Sacramento, Stockton, Lodi and Rancho Cordova.
The program was founded decades ago by Phyllis Swensen under the name Amador County Cancer Transportation Program (ACCTP). Phyllis is now an honorary board member of the Amador STARS, who took over the transportation program in 2004.
